EAST-WEST ARTERIAL

road extension

Overview

Sustainable Cayman is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to protecting the Cayman Islands' natural resources through education and advocacy. Following the government's announcement of the proposed East-West Arterial Road Extension, the organization sought to educate the public about the project's potential environmental impacts while advocating for a less destructive alternative supported by environmental experts.

My task was to transform a highly technical and politically sensitive issue into an engaging Instagram Reels campaign that simplified complex information, amplified community voices, and encouraged informed public discussion through video-first storytelling.

My role

  • Campaign concept

  • Social media strategy

  • Scriptwriting

  • Short-form video editing

  • Multi-format campaign design

The Challenge

The campaign needed to communicate a technically complex environmental issue while navigating political sensitivities and differing public opinions. The challenge was to educate audiences without overwhelming them, maintain credibility while advocating for change, and present large amounts of information in a format that remained engaging on social media.

STRATEGY

CONTENT STRATEGY

Before developing any creative concepts, I immersed myself in the subject matter to understand the proposed road extension, the environmental concerns surrounding it, the stakeholders involved, and the broader political context. This research allowed me to identify the audience's key knowledge gaps and determine which messages would have the greatest impact.

Rather than overwhelming audiences with technical reports and lengthy explanations, I structured the campaign as a progressive educational journey. Early content introduced the issue and encouraged viewers to ask questions, while later reels explored environmental impacts, government decision-making, and community perspectives before encouraging support for the alternative route recommended by environmental experts.

Recognizing that people connect more readily with people than with policy, I intentionally balanced educational content with community voices. Interviews with tourism professionals, environmental leaders, and local residents helped humanize the issue while making complex information feel more relatable and trustworthy.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

Because much of the information was factual and discussion-heavy, my creative focus was on maintaining viewer attention. I combined interview footage with stock video, archival news coverage, motion graphics, subtitles, and dramatic music to create visual variety while reinforcing the seriousness of the issue. In some instances, original scripts with AI voice narration were used to maintain momentum without compromising clarity or engagement. This ensured important messages remained concise and accessible while preserving the campaign's production schedule.

As the campaign evolved, additional video content was introduced, including green-screen recordings of a well-known local figure delivering campaign updates. While the creative concept and footage were provided by the client, I edited the segments, sourced supporting B-roll, and integrated them into the existing campaign style to create engaging, news-style reels that remained visually consistent with the broader campaign.

WHAT I LEARNED

This project reinforced the importance of combining research, strategic communication, and visual design when addressing complex public issues. It challenged me to think beyond creating attractive graphics and instead focus on building a campaign that progressively educated, engaged, and motivated people to take action. It also strengthened my ability to communicate nuanced topics in ways that felt clear, approachable, and emotionally relevant to diverse audiences.
